China is one of the countries most affected by typhoons in the world. Every summer and autumn typhoons hit the southeast coast of China. To deepen the understanding of typhoons and ensure vacation safety, all international students are advised to read the following safety tips carefully to strengthen the ability and awareness of anti-typhoons.

        1. Q&A about the typhoon

What is a typhoon?

Typhoons form in warm waters and weaken when the water temperature goes below 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Typhoons develop slowly and mainly affect Vietnam, Japan, southern China and so on. Typhoons cause storm surges and heavy rain and bring high winds.

What are the impacts of typhoons?

The typhoon often leads to a dangerous situation, caused bysea waves, threat to maritime security. It will bring heavy rain and strong winds. This will make the crops flooded, houses, roads and other facilities will be destroyed. The disasters caused by the typhoon also include landslides and debris flows caused by heavy rains.

What are China's Four Typhoon Warning Signals?

Signal blue: A typhoon may come within 24 hours with strong winds of 22 mph (39 kph) or higher. It is a warning to keep alert and flights and bullet trains may be delayed or canceled.

Signal yellow:A typhoon with winds of 34 mph (62 kph) or higher is coming in 24 hours.

Signal orange:A typhoon is expected to arrive in 12 hours with gale winds of 48 mph (89 kph) or higher. It warns the public to close schools and businesses and prepare their home or stay where they are as safe as possible.

Signal red:It is predicted a typhoon with winds of 64 mph (118 kph) or higher may hit the area within 6 hours. A signal red is the most severe and the rarest, with devastating force.


2. How to deal with typhoon?

Before a Typhoon

Evacuation and reinforcement

  • Do not stay in dilapidated buildings, temporary structures, etc.

  • Move people in low-lying areas prone to flooding to a safe place.

  • Close windows and doors at home and reinforce the outdoor air-conditioning units.

  • Put away items hanging from window sills.

Check and clean up

  • Avoid going out and stop open-air group activities and large-scale indoor gatherings.

  • Check the safety of electric circuits, stoves, gas and other facilities.

  • Clean drains to prevent flooding in your home.

Prepare emergency kits

  • Stock up on non-perishable food and bottled water.

  • Prepare necessary medicines.

  • Prepare emergency supplies such as power banks, flashlights and whistles.


During a Typhoon

  • Stay updated on the latest typhoon information.

  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.

  • Don't use radio, cell phone, etc. during a thunderstorm.

  • When a typhoon passes through a local area and the wind is strong, take shelter in a room with no or very small windows, such as a bathroom.

  • When walking to an evacuation site during a typhoon, be careful to hold onto railings and other fixed objects and try to stay low to avoid billboards, trees, buildings, etc.

  • Close doors and windows tightly and take protective measures for glass and aluminum windows and doors. If necessary, use adhesive tape to reinforce window panes.
