Coastal areas in East China should be on full alert for rainstorms and strong winds as Typhoon In-Fa may make landfall between Zhejiang and Fujian provinces on Saturday night or Sunday, the National Meteorological Center said.

1.What to Do Before a Typhoon

Prepare Your Home: Make sure windows and doors could be closed properly. Secure or move inside outdoor items. Check on electrical appliances and gas. Stock your emergency kit, including flashlight, power banks, radio, food, drinking water and medicine.

Secure Your Car: Park in safe places, eg. on high grounds or in the garage. Avoid places with falling object hazards or flooding risks. Check your car, make sure they can be used during emergency.

Relocate to Safe Places: Evacuate to an alternate safe area, especially when you are informed to do so. During evacuation, bring your essentials, especially clothes and easy-to-prepare food. Anything you don’t want to risk immersing in water should be moved to a higher level.

2. During a Typhoon

In the Household: Stay inside as much as possible. If you are caught in the storm outdoors, avoid taking shelter near glass structures, makeshift or dilapidated buildings, billboards, neon lights and high-rises. Avoid walking near waterways and on bridges.

In Your Work Place: Safety of personal comes first. Stay alert. Stock up supplies, eg. sandbags, flashlights, raincoats, rain boots, tarps, steel wires and food. If it starts to flood, turn off electricity.

3. After a Typhoon

Avoid going to places with landslide hazards. Check before going to mountainous areas.

Follow instructions and go back home only when your destination is declared safe. Check for water contamination. Run a check on electrical appliances and gas before using them. Know your local helpline in case of emergency.

Watch out for contamination. Dink disinfected or boiled water only. Do not use exposed water to wash your body, food, or utensils. Make sure everything you eat is thoroughly cooked. Throw out food that may have gone bad. Wash hands properly and often. Clear your home of debris, stool and animal cadavers. Areas immersed underwater should be disinfected.

DO NOT PANIC if you are in danger. Calm down and signal for help. Try to spell out an SOS signal on the ground. Use fire crackers or the international fire signal for help--three fires laid out in a triangular formation. Use reflective surface or wave brightly-colored things to catch attention.
